FARMERS at the Bwanya Irrigation Scheme in Chivi North are recording improved harvests and incomes following the installation of a solar-powered irrigation system by the Government.
The project has brought renewed optimism to communities in the drought-prone district, where erratic rainfall has long constrained agricultural production.
With a reliable year-round water supply now in place, farmers are able to irrigate their crops consistently, resulting in increased yields and enhanced productivity.
The improved harvests are translating into better livelihoods, with farmers using proceeds from their produce to improve housing, pay school fees and invest in income-generating activities.
The solar-powered irrigation system has also reduced operating costs while improving efficiency, strengthening the sustainability of agricultural production in the area.
Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Ezra Chadzamira, said the Bwanya Irrigation Scheme reflects Government’s commitment to rural industrialisation and inclusive development.
He said the project is contributing to improved household incomes, enhanced food security and greater economic empowerment within the community.
The scheme forms part of broader Government efforts to establish 35 000 Village Business Units nationwide through the provision of reliable water sources and irrigation infrastructure.
Bwanya Irrigation Scheme is emerging as one of the success stories of the initiative, demonstrating the impact of irrigation development on food production, livelihoods and rural economic growth.
