ZIMBABWE has intensified efforts to expand its export footprint and strengthen regional industrial cooperation through participation at the ongoing DRC Mining Week in Lubumbashi, where the country’s mining sector is engaging new partners and reinforcing strategic trade linkages with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The event, which seeks to position Africa as a global supplier of value-added mineral products, has brought together policymakers, investors and industry leaders to advance discussions on investment, critical minerals and the development of robust continental value chains.
Experts say mining remains Africa’s “Trojan Horse”, underlining its central role in driving industrialisation, structural transformation and global competitiveness through enhanced collaboration and value addition.
Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to the DRC, Ambassador David Sigauke, said the country is ready to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with the DRC across mining and related sectors.
“DRC is one of the country’s which has large-scale mining. As we also have a robust mining sector back home, we can have strategic partnerships that are mutually beneficial for our nations. For example, we can export our vast skills base. But we can also leverage our agricultural capacities,” he said.
As global demand for critical minerals continues to surge, Africa is increasingly repositioning itself from a primary resource supplier to a strategic partner in the global energy transition, industrial development and economic security.
In this context, platforms such as the DRC Mining Week are viewed as critical in advancing Africa’s trade integration and strengthening intra-continental partnerships.
Under the National Development Strategy 2, Government is prioritising industrialisation, modernisation, value addition and beneficiation as key drivers of export growth and economic transformation.
Zimbabwe’s export earnings to the DRC currently stand at just below US$140 million, with significant potential for expansion as trade promotion initiatives led by ZimTrade gather momentum.
On the second day of the exhibition, rising commercial interest in Zimbabwe’s leading beverage manufacturer also signalled growing opportunities for expanded market penetration in Central Africa.
