Rescue underway after mine collapse traps two in Goromonzi

Story by Kenias Chivuzhe
TWO miners are feared trapped underground following a tunnel collapse at Guensey Gold Mine in Goromonzi early Friday morning.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the day when a section of the mine tunnel reportedly gave way, trapping the two workers underground.
According to initial reports, a worker stationed at the mine’s communication centre noticed fine debris falling inside the tunnel, often regarded as an early warning sign of structural instability.
The worker is said to have immediately alerted the two miners, who were working deep underground, and advised them to evacuate the area.
However, the miners allegedly chose to continue with their task before attempting to leave and were subsequently trapped when the tunnel collapsed.
Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed the incident.
Rescue operations are currently underway as emergency teams work to assess the extent of the collapse and safely retrieve the trapped miners.
