THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has rolled out its Family Week initiative at Gwanda Prison, providing a platform for inmates and their families to reconnect and strengthen bonds ahead of reintegration into society.
The week-long programme, aimed at demystifying prison life and promoting rehabilitation, saw families gathering at the facility to spend time with their incarcerated relatives in a more relaxed environment.
Emotional reunions marked the event, including that of a father meeting his child for the first time since being incarcerated when the infant was just two months old.
“I was arrested when my child was just two months and I am so happy that I have managed to see him,” an inmate said.
The initiative also created space for inmates to seek forgiveness and rebuild relationships with their loved ones.
“Being arrested is not the end of the world, so having this opportunity helps us to integrate,” another inmate noted.
Family members welcomed the programme, describing it as a source of hope and healing.
“I am so happy to have seen my husband again. It gives us hope,” a visiting spouse said.
Deputy Officer-in-Charge for ZPCS Gwanda, Mr Orwell Zimondi said the initiative is critical in helping inmates and families prepare for life after incarceration.
“This is important for inmates and their families. It is time for them to make plans for restitution, forgiveness and bonding. Schools are closed and children have brought their reports to their fathers, who are in prison,” he said.
The Family Week programme forms part of ZPCS’s broader shift from a punitive system to a correctional and rehabilitation-focused approach.
The initiative is designed to support inmates’ eventual reintegration into society by strengthening family ties, which are key to reducing reoffending and promoting social stability.
