THE Zimbabwe national football team continued fine-tuning their preparations for the upcoming Four-Nations Tournament in Botswana, playing out a goalless draw against Highlanders FC in a practice match at Barbourfields Stadium on Wednesday.
The encounter attracted a full house, with fans turning out in large numbers as Highlanders marked their centenary celebrations in a vibrant atmosphere.
With limited time before the regional tournament, the match offered the Warriors a crucial opportunity to assess combinations and match fitness.
It was a game of two halves, with Highlanders dominating possession in the opening period, while the Warriors grew into the contest after the break and posed a greater attacking threat.
Despite the tempo and intensity from both sides, neither team managed to find the back of the net.
“I think we had a good game. They were structured and we were comfortable. We have been struggling to score, but it is a positive for us. We used the match to try combinations and give others a chance,” said Highlanders head coach Benjani Mwaruwari.
Warriors coach Marian Marinica acknowledged his side is still building momentum.
“We enjoyed a good atmosphere in the city. It was a game of two halves and it shows we are a little behind in our preparations,” he said.
Defender Munashe Garanganga described the occasion as special.
“I was happy to play in front of Zimbabwean fans. It was a tough match and we are still building as a team,” he said.
The Warriors are set to face hosts Botswana in the second semi-final of the Four-Nations Tournament, while Zambia national football team take on Malawi national football team in the opening semi-final.
The team is expected to depart for Francistown this Thursday.
