FORMER Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari has conceded that he faces a demanding rebuilding task at Highlanders Football Club, but says he is ready to shoulder the responsibility as he begins his tenure as head coach.
Mwaruwari arrived in Bulawayo on Saturday and has since held engagements with the Highlanders executive, formally assuming his duties following his appointment earlier this week.
The former national team skipper inherits a club in transition, with Bosso preparing for the 2026 Premier Soccer League season after the departure of several key players to rival top-flight sides. Speaking after his confirmation, Mwaruwari said his immediate priority is to stabilise and rebuild the squad while restoring the club’s competitive edge.
“Highlanders is a big club with a rich history. The task now is to rebuild, to work hard and make sure we put together a strong and competitive team that can challenge in the coming season,” he said.
A product of the club’s junior system, Mwaruwari described his return as both a professional challenge and a personal homecoming, noting that Highlanders played a formative role in his football journey.
His appointment comes amid uncertainty surrounding South African coach Thabo Senong, who had earlier been named for a similar position but has yet to secure a work permit.
The club has not provided clarity on Senong’s future involvement, indicating that further announcements regarding the technical team will be made in due course.
