CHURCHES in Zimbabwe are playing an increasingly active role in supporting the Second Republic’s devolution agenda, complementing Government efforts to improve livelihoods and promote socio-economic development at grassroots level.
In Zvishavane, churches under the Union for the Development of Apostolic and Zionist Churches in Zimbabwe are making notable progress through initiatives aimed at enhancing access to services and strengthening community engagement.
Among the key interventions is the establishment of information centres at Daitai Clinic, Bilashaba Community Hall, and Fizhu Primary School, a development expected to improve information dissemination and service delivery within the district. These developments were highlighted during a one-day workshop jointly held by the organisation and Government officials in Zvishavane on Wednesday.
“They taught us to understand the concept of devolution programmes, like in wards 12 and 17. Here in Zvishavane they have installed Wifi for schools through Starlink Fibre, which makes it easier for communication,” a participant said.
“All this time along, we thought devolution was in Harare, until this church organisation came through last year to fully articulate and unpack what devolution programmes look like. They have contributed a lot to the Zvishavane district. They made synergies and unlocked avenues for us in various sectors of the economy, like mining, health, education and infrastructure development,” a community member said.
“This is a good initiative that we have been longing for as Zvishavane people. We have seen what the church has done for us, and they are educating us on the importance of devolution and development,” a resident said.
The government has commended the role being played by the church in promoting development in Zvishavane.
“In Zvishavane we have seen tangible programmes being done. The vision is to encourage communities to tap into devolution programs and empowerment through various means. Government is eager to see the Church actively contributing to national development, social healing and unity,” Zvishavane District Assistant Development coordinator, Mr Lucas Chinhara said.
The church was also implored to partner with government agencies and non-governmental organisations to create comprehensive strategies to combat drug and substance abuse in communities.
