THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has introduced body-worn cameras for officers operating under its newly rebranded National Highway Patrol unit, marking a significant step in the modernisation of traffic law enforcement.
Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba launched the initiative, noting that the cameras to be worn by both drivers and assistants will enhance transparency, accountability, and evidence gathering as part of an expanded electronic traffic management system.
The body-worn cameras accompany the deployment of five high-powered Ford Ranger vehicles equipped with advanced monitoring technology, intended to strengthen policing capacity on major highways during the festive season and beyond.
Commissioner-General Mutamba said the upgraded fleet will increase visibility and mobility on routes that traditionally experience heightened traffic volumes at year-end. He added that police will intensify efforts against reckless and dangerous driving to reduce accidents and safeguard the travelling public.
Members of the public have been encouraged to report hazardous conduct and to approach the newly deployed patrol teams for immediate assistance.
