Sungura icon Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria has died.
He was 66.
In a statement released on his official social media page, the Zakaria family confirmed his death, expressing profound sadness and praising the musician’s lifelong dedication to his craft.
Known to many as The Senior Lecturer, Zakaria built a career spanning over four decades and became a defining voice in sungura music.
His hit songs including “Mabvi Nemagokora” and “Zomvela Mvela” cemented his place as one of the genre’s most influential artists.
Through the iconic Khiama Boys, Zakaria mentored and groomed several musicians who went on to become household names, earning him widespread respect for nurturing talent and preserving Zimbabwe’s musical heritage.
Tributes are pouring in from fans, fellow artists and cultural institutions, remembering him as a humble teacher, a disciplined guitarist and a pioneer whose work shaped generations.
Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
