ZIMBABWE’S green economy roadmap has received the backing of development partners and parliamentarians as industry and commerce target sustainable production systems.

It emerged at a green economy meeting that local production sectors are focusing on sustainable operations that protect the environment and facilitate use of resources by the future generations.

Development partners and parliamentarians are expecting the initiative to positively affect economic development aspirations.

“The initiative is coming at the right time when we expect the nation to derive more benefits in terms of accelerating development at a time when the nation needs more in terms of embracing the system, we are working with the relevant authorities in ensuring that it succeeds in Zimbabwe, ” UN Habitat, Project Manager, Mr Alexander Chileshe said.

“The input which we have gathered here is of greater importance and it is our thrust that we shall take further steps in incorporating the green economy aspirations into our legislative agenda, going forward the entire plan if put on paper will translate into positive results for the nation,” Portfolio Committee on Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Chairperson, Honourable Sam Matema said.

The green economy aspirations are biased towards ensuring industry and commerce adopt clean energy systems, focus on planting more trees and sustainable waste management policies.

“As the regulatory council our plans are mainly promised on promoting awareness, ensuring the technical aspect of our objectives are implemented through focusing on long term goals of sustainable economic growth, this is in line with Sustainable Development Goals number 11, so indeed we shall do our best to ensure industry and commerce embrace the entire plan,” Head of Secretariat, Green Building Council of Zimbabwe, Ms Clara Mapokotera said.

Under the green economy strategy, Zimbabwe like other global economies, is focusing on reducing gas emissions, resource depletion and renewable energy policies, among other indicators.
