AS the country joined the rest of the world in marking May Day, workers around the country celebrated the day in style through sports tournaments.
In Masvingo, it was a day marked with various sporting activities including marathon, walking competition, soccer, basketball, netball, aerobics, darts and pool games as Bikita Minerals employees commemorated Workers Day.
Workers say the tournament dubbed, “Bikita Minerals Sports Gala” gave them an opportunity to interact and prioritise health issues.
“Today is an important day not only to workers at Bikita Minerals, but to workers all over the world. It is a day to recognise the many contributions workers have made in various sectors of the economy. As Bikita Minerals workers, we recognise the effort that has been done by our employer to organise a sporting tournament for us. We have had a chance to interact, play games, and check on our health through having access to different healthcare practitioners,” Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union, Mr Rodrick Tavarwisa said.
The mining firm says prioritising employees is key to ensure improved production, hence engagements through various initiatives, including sports.
“As a company, we prioritise the role that is being played by our employees and workers hence today’s event. Since the company took over in 2022 the number of employees have increased five times more to 1 360 directly employed and many of them are local youths and women. In today’s fast-paced and demanding work environments, prioritising the health and well-being of employees has become essential for fostering a thriving and productive workforce hence we came up with this sports tournament,” Bikita Minerals Mine Manager, Mr David Mwanza said.
Winners in various disciplines were presented with prizes.
