Govt makes inroads with the implementation of agroecology

THE Government  is making inroads with the implementation of agroecology as a solution to climate change related disasters and food insecurity.

Agroecology is a holistic approach to agriculture which focuses on sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices, emphasising the importance of ecological interactions and biodiversity in agricultural ecosystems, aimed at creating resilient and self-sufficient farming systems.

The loss of biodiversity and recurrent droughts are some of the many factors that are contributing to low crop productivity among smallholder farmers with climate change worsening the situation.

As Zimbabwe works towards sustainable agriculture practices, embracing agroecology as a means of addressing climate change and bolstering food security has been noted as key in fostering long term solutions that empowers communities.

“Agroecology is an important part of the solution. This is an integrated and holistic approach to transforming food systems. Through it, it’s possible to produce enough diverse and affordable foods while conserving and protecting biodiversity and natural resources,” the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Water, Fisheries and Rural Development, Professor Obert Jiri said.

“Agroecology empowers small-scale producers, particularly women and youth, as shapers of sustainable food systems. By combining ecological principles, traditional knowledge and modern science, agroecological techniques are environmentally sustainable, socially just and economically viable.”

Agroecology helps to conserve and sustainably use and value the biodiversity and ecosystem services that underpin food production.

It involves the use of techniques such as crop rotation, composting, and biological pest control, which can improve soil health, increase crop yields, and reduce the use of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides.

Zimbabwe currently is implementing an Agroecology Promotion Policy and Strategy which started in  2024 and will end in 2030.
