Zim-Mexico relations poised for growth

RELATIONS between Zimbabwe and Mexico are set to grow in the new dispensation led by the newly sworn-in President of the North American nation, Her Excellency Claudia Sheinbaum.

Mexicans came in their numbers to support the country’s first female President this Tuesday at a ceremony held at the legislative Palace in San Lazaro in the heart of Mexico City.

Zimbabwe was part of the festivities with Vice President Colonel (Rtd) Kembo Mohadi leading the delegation to the North American nation, whose economy is on a growth trajectory.

The latest figures reveal that Mexico’s Gross Domestic Product is at US$1.5 trillion.

In an interview after the festivities, Vice President Mohadi said the current low volume of trade between the two nations must improve given Mexico’s interest in the iron and steel industry as well as agriculture, mining, and tourism.

He said, “The current trade levels between the two nations is not pleasing and we have to work on that as we grow the economies of the two nations. Mexico is good in the iron and steel sector and we have that resource so that is one key area of interest but it does not end there.

“They are good in food processing and farming. There are also issues of scholarships, we want our youths to come and study here so that we benefit from technology transfer because they have the technology which we are kin to access.”

Going forward, Zimbabwe aims to bolster relations through its embassy in the United States of America, also covering Mexico and Panama.

“I have directed our embassy in Washington to engage the Mexican
business people and invite them to Zimbabwe so that they can invest.

“Remember, Mexico’s per capita income is huge, indicating that they have money and can invest it in Zimbabwe so this is critical for our economy,” said the Vice President.

The Vice President also challenged Zimbabwean businesspeople to reach out to their Mexican counterparts to create synergies.
