Footgolf gets buy-in from Midlands stakeholders

It was a fun-filled weekend at the Gweru Golf Club as the Zimbabwe Footgolf Association introduced the sport to the Midlands community.

Footgolf is a hybrid sport which uses all golf rules but exchanges the golf club with football shoes.

The new sport has taken the Midlands province by storm after it was introduced at the weekend.

“I am very happy to have joined this sport. It’s a good exercise that I am getting from Footgolf. Ever since I was introduced to the sport I have never looked backwards,” said a footgolf enthusiast.

“It is quite an interesting sport. You get to know a lot of influential people through the sport. It’s amazing how we go about playing this unique sport,” noted another.

The Zimbabwe Footgolf Association has vowed to take the sport to the grassroots and ensure the growth of the discipline.

“We want to work with all stakeholders in making sure that the sport grows. We have also come up with structures at the district level. We are now part of NAF activities as of 2025. We are also moving to teachers’ colleges to ensure that as the teachers graduate they understand the sporting activity and take to the various schools,” said Zimbabwe Footgolf Association president, Daniel Kuwenga.

Government says it will continue to support new initiatives which resonate with the National Development Strategy 1.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, world-over, sports, arts and culture have assumed cross-cutting dimensions in addressing socio-economic and political challenges in communities by promoting physical and mental health, inculcating values of discipline, teamwork, resilience peace, and unity. Indeed, as we all now may be aware, sports have the power to transform lives as a form of employment and offer immense business opportunities, build character, promote social cohesion and foster a sense of belonging,” highlighted Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube.

Footgolf has taken off in other countries with a regional tournament set to be held in South Africa this weekend.
