Illegal foreign currency dealers to remain in custody until Monday

Story by Peter Chivhima

Illegal foreign currency dealers, who were arrested last week on allegations of contravening Exchange Control Regulations will spend more days behind bars after their matter was deferred to Monday next week.

60 of the initial 65 illegal foreign currency dealers who were arrested last week will have to endure the discomfort of prison cells for more days with their matter only set to be heard on Monday next week.

The court indicated that it intends to call the investigating officers to explain the suspects’ behaviour during their arrest.

The development means that out of the initial 65 suspects, only five Collen Matiringe, Terrence Vangaridze, Lovemore Duri, Johnson Kamhuka and Malvern Marere will be back in court on Friday for bail application.

The suspects were arrested last week as the government tightens screws on unscrupulous individuals who are bent on sabotaging economic measures put in place by fiscal and monetary authorities to stabilise the local economy.

The ongoing blitz targeting illegal foreign currency dealers is being jointly carried out by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Financial Intelligence Unit.
