THE Harare City Council elected recalled Councillor Lovejoy Chitengu as the new Mayor as chaos marred the local authority plebiscite at Harare Town House this Tuesday.
Councillor Chitengu was elected after two hours of chaos as the letter citing Chitengu’s recall had spelling errors, a technicality that divided the chambers with councillors almost trading blows.
When proceedings resumed, Councillor Chitengu won the poll ahead of Councillor Temany Utete of ZANU PF.
He will be deputised by Councillor Rosemary Muronda of the CCC.
“I’m very excited by the new prospects of being the new mayor though it comes in the midst of chaos, I’m grateful for the trust the councillors have shown me. I will be ready to carry on from the plan my predecessor had to tackle service delivery issues,” said Councillor Chitengu.
Councillor Chitengu replaces Councillor Ian Makone who was caught up in a spate of recalls initiated by CCC Interim Secretary General Sengezo Tshabangu.
