ZIMBABWE and Mozambique have intensified efforts around the establishment of various history and heritage features at the Museum of African Liberation in Harare.
Following the ground-breaking ceremony at the proposed Samora Machel Monument and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Zimbabwe and Mozambique during the State visit by Mozambique President Cde Filipe Nyusi in May this year, the two countries have escalated efforts to establish the monument.
The visiting Mozambican delegation briefed the media in Harare this Wednesday on what to expect at the Liberation City.
“Our visit reaffirms Mozambique’s commitment to the projects. Since we heard about the project we embraced it because it is not only for Zimbabwe. It is an African project which allows us to tell our own story as Africans.
“We will also recognise those who helped us to fight for our liberation through this project, it is indeed a huge project about African history, it is more than a museum. This is a place that will disseminate our common history, our success and to strengthen our brotherhood and friendship. It will be the heart of Africa. We are proud we have this special place. It’s a privilege for us,” said Mozambican Minister of Tourism and Cultural Heritage, Eldevina Materula.
The Mozambican government is providing artefacts and financial assistance towards the project.
“Mozambique government has committed to supporting by way of providing artefacts which are cultural and military in nature, financial assistance, supervising and fully funding the Samora Machel monument and by Sept 2024 we will be launching the monument. We thank the Minister for coming to Zimbabwe on behalf of the Mozambican government,” said the chief executive officer of INSTAK,Kwame Muzavazi.
The establishment of the Museum of African Liberation is a priority project for Zimbabwe and its fellow African countries as it will become a key resource centre for the history of the continent.
