Independence Flame taken to Manicaland

Story by Wellington Makonese

PREPARATIONS for Zimbabwe’s 44th Independence Anniversary are in motion, with the Independence Flame having been taken from the Museum of Human Sciences in Harare to Manicaland province this Thursday.

Modalities have been made for the procession which will see the flame being handed to the local leadership in the province.

National Heroes Acre’s resident curator, Ms Rumbidzai Bvira said, “ We are going to make our first stop in Headlands from there we will go to the butcher site in Rusape and tomorrow we are going to have a ceremony where the vice president is going to hand over the flame to Manicaland leadership before it travels to meet the people educating them about the significance of the independence flame.”

The tour is part of a process to highlight the significance of the flame.

“We are going to educate them about liberation monuments in Manicaland, so we are also going to market all the monuments, interpret or explain to the people,” added Ms Bvira.

The independence flame was first lit on the 17th of April in1980 signifying the birth of Zimbabwe from colonial subjugation.

This year’s celebrations are running under the theme: Zim@44, Unity, Peace, and Development towards Vision 2030.
