GORVENMENT is in course to meeting its target of constructing 225 000 housing units by 2025 with 185 000 housing units having been built across the country through public private partnerships.

The adoption of new technologies is also expected to help surpass the target.

The Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities, Honourable Daniel Garwe says no stone will be left unturned in reducing the country’s housing backlog.

‘‘According to NDS1, we have a target of 225 000 housing units, and I’m happy that together with the private sector, we have delivered 185 000 housing units. This means we are on track meeting the target, these housing units have been constructed across the country, including these new ones, which have been commissioned.’’

Oxford Properties Director Operations Mr Michael Swan, whose company is delivering accommodation in Harare, disclosed that they have adopted a modern set up where housing units meet the needs of every family.

‘‘We have delivered 1200 housing units, and these blocks of flats will house 152 apartments. We have adopted the Smart City concept by government and we have another project that will have 1 300 units,” he said.’’

With the development of new technologies in the construction sector, government is confident of meeting housing demand across the country.

Hon. Garwe added, ‘‘The new technologies gave us an opportunity to make sure we attain all our targets as it will take less time in constructing a unit. I believe we will be able to end the housing back log soon.’’

Zimbabwe has a huge backlog of approximately 1.5 million housing units and with the rate at which the Second Republic is delivering, set targets are on course to be met.
