National swimming championships set for Bulawayo

Story by Mthokozisi Dube

MORE than 300 swimmers from across the country are set to converge in Bulawayo for the Zimbabwe national swimming championships, which roar into life this Thursday.

Bulawayo Amateur Swimming Association chairperson, Phawulani Ngwenya revealed that besides a few touch-ups to Bulawayo City Pool, they are ready for the event.

‘‘We are very much prepared and also excited to host this swimming gala. So far we have had a preparatory meeting for the event. We expect 300 athletes to compete. Harare has the biggest number followed by Bulawayo although based on the last performance, Bulawayo has a strong team. So as Bulawayo, we are gunning for the aggregate trophy and we will bank on our captain Dylan Lee, who will be assisted by Nathan Ngwenya.’’

The national swimming championships are a four-stroke event in distances ranging from 50m to 800m

There is also the 1500 free style and individual medley.

South Africa Swimming President, Alan Fritz will officially open this year’s swimming gala.
