ZIMBABWE’S Chevrons failed to qualify for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup despite a 110-run win over Kenya in the Africa Qualifiers in Windhoek, Namibia this Thursday.
The Chevrons victory mattered little as Uganda sealed second place at the ongoing International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier in Namibia.
It is one of the lowest point in Zimbabwe Cricket as the Chevrons are the only full-member side that won’t be at the now 20-team World Cup.
In their place, minnows Uganda which is made up of semi-professional cricketers will be at the World Cup together with hosts Namibia who sealed the top spot and ensured they go to back-to-back World cups.
Thursday’s result mattered little as Zimbabwe no longer had fate in their hands after losing the first match to hosts Namibia before another morale-shattering defeat to Uganda.
Zimbabwe needed Uganda to drop points while they beat Kenya to join Namibia for a trip to West Indies and the United States for the global showpiece.
Zimbabwe’s poor run in World Cup qualifiers continued as they have failed to make the cut for the 2019 and 2023 ODI World Cups, after failing to finish in the top two in qualifying tournaments on home soil.
The Chevrons will need to introspect after losing to Namibia 3-2 before the World Cup Qualifiers and their dismal run continued at the tournament proper where they were largely expected to win.
