16-team netball league on the cards in Bulawayo

Story by Mthokozisi Dube

BULAWAYO Metropolitan Province is set to unite under a 16-team netball league affiliated to the Zimbabwe Netball Association.

Despite being a netball hub with power houses like Sikhulile, Sobukhazi and Mpopoma high schools, Bulawayo province has been operating without a competitive league affiliated to the Zimbabwe Netball Association (ZINA).

Four social leagues Bulawayo Christian, Prevention, Masiye and Titans have been running the show, but the players have found the going tough in terms of breaking into the national team.

An annual general meeting held recently has opened a window of opportunity after a proposal to come up with a 16-team league was adopted.

ZINA Bulawayo province chairperson Chris Ndlovu said, “We had no proper league but after a closer look at the bigger picture, we have resorted to forming a league affiliated to the mother body in the coming year. We had representatives from the four leagues, and we spoke from the same page.”

The functional league is expected to boost talent identification and give budding netball players exposure.
