Windies flex muscles

Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

Former World champions West Indies thumped Nepal by 101 runs as they romped to a second successive victory in the ongoing International Cricket Council World Cup Qualifier at Harare Sports Club this Thursday.

Centuries from Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran saw West Indies post 339 and demolish a hapless Nepal by 101 runs to boost their Super Six hopes.

West Indies batted first and were in a spot of bother after losing three quick wickets but Hope and Pooran combined for a 216-run partnership as West Indies put up the highest score of the tournament so far.

In reply, Nepal never got going despite being given a lifeline by the West Indian fielders who were sloppy in the field.

Nepal were eventually dismissed for 238 runs giving West Indies their second consecutive win and joining Zimbabwe at the top of Group A with four points apiece ahead of their showdown at Harare Sports Club this Saturday.

At Takashinga Cricket Club, The Netherlands beat the United States of America by five wickets as they registered their first win of the tournament.

West Indies are now on top of Group A with four points from two matches ahead of Zimbabwe who have an inferior net run rate.

The Netherlands have two points from two matches while Nepal have the same number of points having played a game more.

USA anchor the log without a point from three matches.

The top three teams will progress to the Super Six stage where eventual top two teams will qualify for the 2023 World Cup set for India in November.
