Warriors get World Cup qualifies campaign going

Story by Anashe Murombedzi

THE Zimbabwe Warriors arrived in Rwanda this Saturday ahead of their 2026 World Cup qualifiers campaign against Rwanda and Nigeria at Huye Stadium in Butare, Rwanda.

The Warriors’ technical team and locally based players, Tanaka Shandirwa, Frank Makarati, Donovan Bernard, Walter Musona, Obriel Chirinda, Peter Muduhwa, Andrew Mbeba, and Brian Banda have arrived in Rwanda.

The team will be based in Kigali till Monday when they will move to Butare where their matches will kick off.

After suffering an 18-month FIFA suspension and being re-admitted to international football, the Warriors are geared up for their first international assignment.

“It is very important to represent your country although it is very important to play for our clubs, but the country is more important. We are very happy, and I know everyone is expecting a lot from us but the best feeling to tell you the truth is to come back to the national team,” said Warriors midfielder, Gerald Takwara.

The Warriors will play the hosts Rwanda in their first match on Wednesday next week at Huye Stadium before hosting Nigeria at the same venue four days later.

Meanwhile, foreign-based players will be joining their fellow countrymen starting this Saturday to begin their two-day training sessions before the match.
