Warriors eye remarkable comeback to international football

Story by Raynald Ngwarati

THE Zimbabwe senior men’s football team, the Warriors have regrouped for a training camp in preparation for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers which kick off next month.

The Warriors who trooped into camp on Thursday, are continuing to capitalise on the international break which they are using to prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

After the friendly with Botswana was cancelled, the Warriors are not deterred, however, they have continued with routine drills and friendly matches against local division outfits.

This Sunday, the Warriors played against the Northern Region Division one select side at Ellis Robins to familiarise themselves with different opponents, while getting themselves ready for the task ahead.

Despite losing to Northern Region Soccer League Select by three goals to one in a training friendly match, the Warriors are not taking the camp lightly but see it as an opportunity to pose a formidable squad that will give Zimbabwe a remarkable comeback to international football.

“Looking back, it’s been long without playing football as a country. So now we need to train so that we know each other and the coaches can see one or two players. So that when we play next month, they know who to call,” said Warriors defender, Ronald Pfumbidzai.

Warriors striker, Knox Mutizwa said, “We have so many quality players that are playing in South Africa and abroad. So, I think with the quality and when we come together as a nation, I think we’re going to do well.”

Zimbabwe are in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers alongside Rwanda, Nigeria, Benin and South Africa.

The Warriors get their campaign underway with an away tie against Rwanda on the 13th of next month.
