Monalisa Sibanda’s title fight in doubt

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

ZIMBABWEAN female boxer Monalisa Sibanda’s World Alliance Boxing Association (WABA) middleweight world title fight is in doubt after her opponent decided to make it a non-title bout.

Sibanda, who turned 40 last week, was meant to face Maphule Ngubane on February 12 in South Africa for the world title.

However, a cloud of doubt has been cast over the bout after the South African decided to make it a non-title fight, a decision that has not been accepted by her number one challenger affectionately known as “The Queen of the Jungle”.

“We were surprised by the decision, they told us that they want it to be a non-title fight over eight rounds but we refused and they were looking for another opponent and they failed to find a suitor now they are back to us so we are just waiting, they are afraid of me, I am the number one contender and I will just be waiting,” said Sibanda.

Sibanda is the first female boxer to turn professional in Zimbabwe and has been hard at work preparing for the fight under the watchful eye of two-time Karate world champion Shihan Samson Muripo.
