Highlanders Royals prepare for Super League

Story by Mthokozisi Dube

HIGHLANDERS Royals are relishing the prospect of competing with the best as they prepare for their debut season in the Women’s Super League.

A debut season in the topflight has its own fair share of challenges and anxiety but not for Highlanders Royals who are relishing the opportunity to rub shoulders with household names in women’s football.

Royals were promoted to the Women’s Super League last season and they believe it is their time to shine.

“We have been working hard and our mission is simple, to make people believe that Highlanders has an all-conquering ladies side. We are happy to make it into the Super League,” said Highlanders Royals midfielder, Kettina Jupa.

“I conceded eight goals last season but I see myself improving my goalkeeping skills and becoming one of the best shot-stoppers in the country,” said goalkeeper, Unathi Moyo.

Highlanders Royals are also walking with a spring in their step after getting sponsorship and assistant coach Sithandile Khoza says the onus is now on the ladies to fulfil the mission.

“I played for this team and back then we had no sponsorship and now the girls are lucky. We have been assisting them but at this pace, the sky is the limit for them.”

The Women’s Super League is expected to kick off on the 13th of April after passing a vote of no confidence on the Barbara Chikosi-led executive last week

An interim committee led by Theresa Maguraushe has been put in place to steer women’s football.
