After the success of the country’s flagship team, the Sables, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) is hoping the sevens side, the Cheetahs will follow suit this year.
The Cheetahs struggled on the international scene whereas the Sables and the Lady Sables had a decent outing.
The Sables made it to the final of the Africa Cup as well as winning three matches in the Currie Cup while the Lady Sables won the two test matches they played last year.
Zimbabwe Rugby Union President Aaron Jani said, “We are going to continue with the Cheetahs project. We are going to give them more support to achieve their goals. We are going to give them more camps more game time and we believe the idea of home-grown talents is sustainable in the long term.”’’”
The Cheetahs will play in the ramped World Rugby Challenger Series as they try to qualify to be a core member of the Sevens Circuit as well as participate in the Africa Cup that will serve as the Olympic qualifiers.
The Sables, on the other hand, will continue to play in the South African Currie Cup first division, while the Lady Sables have test matches already lined up.
