Shurugwi basks in success of Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme

Story by Courage Bushe

THE Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme has become a source of hope in the face of climate change with farmers from Shurugwi preparing for a bumper harvest.

Shurugwi is predominantly a mining district where the major focus is on tapping into the vast mineral deposits.

It is, however, a different story for people like Mr Nicholas Gara, who has taken advantage of the climate-proof Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme.

“We have managed to plow 10 hectares through the Pfumvudza concept. We are guaranteed more than 40 tonnes this farming season, and I’m optimistic of scooping the best farmer award in the district. This success story is owed to the government’s initiative of Pfumvudza,” he said.

Rivasdale farm manager, Mr Collet Mapepa is equally convinced of the importance of embracing government programmes meant to ensure food security, “As you can see, there is resilience building on this farm because we want to ensure food security.
We are also embarking on the rural industrialisation model, which we think will help us achieve Vision 2030.”

Agriculture expert, Mr Boas Munyanyi Indicated the significance of resilient building in the wake of climate change.

“Instead of focusing on traditional ways of farming. I think it’s high time we focus on modern technologies such as resilient building. This is the only way we can achieve food sufficiency. I implore farmers around to emulate what Mr Gara did.”

The Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme has become a living testimony of the ability of local farmers to increase production for food consumption and commercial purposes.
