GOVERNMENT schools across Zimbabwe have begun enrolling children of returning Zimbabwean citizens from South Africa, as authorities move to ensure learners continue with their education without disruption.
Schools in Harare, Domboshava and Murewa have already admitted a growing number of primary school pupils whose families have returned from South Africa following the recent volatile situation there.
At Lochnivar Primary School in Harare, newly enrolled Grade Six pupils have already joined classes and are preparing for mid-term examinations.
School head Mr Lawrence Manzvanda said measures have been put in place to help the learners settle into their new environment.
“We have enrolled new Grade Six pupils, and they have started well. We have made every effort to ensure they feel secure and welcome in their new environment. Our doors remain open to more new pupils, and we are heeding the Government’s call to welcome Zimbabweans returning from South Africa,” he said.
Lochnivar Primary School is among several schools in Harare that have opened their doors to returning learners.
Kuwangira Primary School in Highfield has also admitted pupils returning from South Africa.
Deputy head Mrs Rumbidzai Mushawatu said the school has prioritised creating a supportive environment for the new learners.
“We have new pupils with us, and we have made them feel welcome. They have settled in well, and we have encouraged our staff and learners to treat them with compassion. Our doors remain open to more pupils,” she said.
School head Mrs Grace Mutikani said assessments were conducted to determine the most appropriate class placement for the returning learners.
“We assessed the new pupils and identified challenges with the Shona language. As a result, some have been placed a grade lower to strengthen their phonics before progressing,” she said.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has also confirmed that returning learners have been enrolled at South Ridge Primary School in Domboshava and St John’s Primary School in Murewa.
Government has urged schools nationwide to continue facilitating the smooth integration of returning pupils to ensure their education proceeds uninterrupted.
