Harare gets ready for SADC

Story by Tendai Munengwa

THE City of Harare is getting a facelift ahead of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Summit in August.

This comes after the local authority took delivery of a fleet of dump trucks by for garbage collection over and above the government’s road construction project.

The Harare Central Business District is a hive of activity as companies given the mandate to spruce up the roads in the CBD are working round the clock to complete the job ahead of the SADC Summit set for this August in the capital city.

“We applaud the government for such development of roads – we have seen new roads being constructed and others are being uploaded,” notes a Harare resident.

Another added, “The Second Republic is doing well in terms of infrastructure development, this will prove to the visiting heads of state that Zimbabwe is a beautiful and peaceful country.”

An engineer with one of the companies upgrading roads in CBD expressed confidence that the projects will be completed on time.

“We thank the Second Republic for affording us local contractors a chance to rehabilitate the roads and we are working in full throttle to bit the end of June deadline,” said the engineer.

The Harare City Council, which has been tasked by government to clean up the city has purchased a fleet of compact trucks for garbage collection.

“We have been tasked to clean Harare – so as you can see we secure this new fleet of dump trucks to clean the messy and ensure a clean environment ahead of the SADC summit, we are repairing robots and street lights out water fountains,” said Harare Town Clerk, Engineer Hosiah Chisango.

Preparations for the SADC summit include road construction and construction of presidential villas to accommodate Heads of State and Government attending the conference.

The hosting of the SADC summit in Zimbabwe has triggered massive infrastructure development with several old roads being upgraded, while a new highway leading to New Parliament Building is nearing completion.
