Criminal elements to be dealt with decisively says ZRP

Story by Peter Chivhima

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has warned elements bent on engaging in criminal activities and causing anarchy in the country that they will be dealt with decisively.

Rogue elements have been put on notice in the wake of recent lawlessness where bus operators and touts have been causing chaos in the country at the expense of public safety.

Delivering his keynote address during the conferment of badges of rank to newly promoted Senior Officers in Harare this Wednesday, ZRP Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga warned those bent on causing chaos in the country saying the long arm of the law will catch up with them.

“The realisation of the National Vision 2030. Undeniably, this vision can only be realised if we reduce the fear of crime in our society. Therefore, all elements who engage in activities that border on criminality and worse still, those acts that are either overtly or covertly calculated to throw this country into anarchy, must be dealt with decisively. You must realise that we are the vanguards of that peace and stability and your elevation should bring forth the required zest and motivation to ensure that we further entrench it among our citizens,” he said.

Turning to the newly promoted senior officers, Commissioner General Matanga challenged them to be duty-bound.

He added, “Let me reiterate that, Discipline remains the bedrock of an effective police organization. Therefore, ensure that it is not only maintained, but must as of necessity, be enforced, among all members and at all times. Let it not escape your minds that you have not been promoted to sit back and be conveyor belts of mediocrity. You are duty-bound to deal decisively with all acts that have an adverse impact on organisational performance.”

The ceremony saw 17 Commissioners, 28 Assistant Commissioners and 41 Superintendents being conferred with new badges of rank before pledging to guarantee a crime-free nation.

“I am excited to be promoted and I pledge to work hard so that together we can create a crime-free nation. Coming to the issue of touts who are causing menace in our country as police we are working flat out to weed out such elements. Besides the operations our Police are always present in areas which we deem crime hot spots so that we prevent crimes,” said the ZRPNational Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

Newly Promoted Officer, Assistant Commissioner Plaxedes Phuti said, “I want to thank President Emerson Mnangagwa for Promoting me to this rank and I want to promise we are going to work with loyalty to create a crime-free nation.”

The 86 Senior Officers were promoted by President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week.
