By-elections; Vote counting underway

VOTING has ended in the April 27 by-election after all polling stations closed at 7pm in the Harare East and Mt Pleasant constituencies to pave way for vote counting.

In Harare East, voting ended in after all polling stations closed on time to pave way for vote counting.

In an interview with ZBC News, Harare East Constituency Elections Officer Mr Tapson Mamungaire said all polling stations closed at 7pm, adding the voting process was incident free.

“All fifty polling stations in Harare East constituency closed at 1900hrs. At 1800hrs we had over 5 000 voters who had cast their votes. The election was peaceful except where some voters were milling around polling stations and the police swiftly intervened. Counting has started at all polling stations,” he said.

Two candidates, ZANU PF’s Cde Kiven Mutimbanyoka and independent candidate Cynthia Ropafadzo Cheza are vying for the National Assembly seat which fell vacant after the resignation of Citizens Coalition for Change legislator Rusty Markham.
