TRADITIONAL leaders have been realigned to concentrate on the transformation of communities by spearheading development in their areas of jurisdiction.
The issue was topical at the installation of Headman Tafurikidza Makone in the Gokwe-Nembudziya constituency this Thursday, an event which was attended by other traditional leaders in Midlands Province.
Gokwe North District Development Coordinator Mr Martin Musakanda, who was representing the Minister of State and Devolution for Midlands Provincial Affairs, Cde Larry Mavhima, said traditional leaders must be respected for their role in communities.
“Traditional leaders ensure that communities are at peace and take charge of developmental programmes in their communities while also pushing government’s project at ward level,” he said.
Chief Chireya, who presided over the ceremony, urged traditional leaders to foster development to retain the respect of the communities they lead.
He said, “It is important for traditional leaders to remain apolitical in whatever they do. This is critical for the development of the country.”
Gokwe-Nembudziya Legislator, Cde Justice Mayor Wadyajena urged Zimbabweans to maintain the prevailing peaceful environment beyond the election period.
“It is an election season and citizens must desist from violence and maintain a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after elections for the good of our country,” he said.
The legislator donated bicycles to traditional leaders to ensure they fully and effectively discharge their duties for the benefit of communities.
