AT least three villages and three institutions in the Kajekache community in Hurungwe West are set to benefit from a piped water scheme being implemented in the district.
The scheme is part of government’s rural development agenda.
Apart from providing clean water for communities, the scheme will significantly help in stemming staff turnover at rural schools and health institutions.
A resident said, ‘‘We used to get our water from a bush pump borehole which is a distance away. The situation affected our business.’’
Another resident noted, ‘‘We have over 1 000 pupils and they rely on one borehole so the piped water scheme will eliminate the risk of diseases associated with water shortage challenges.’’
Rural Infrastructure Development Agency Head Mashonaland West Mr Ericana Chikande said, ‘‘The scheme is the third in Hurungwe following the establishment of one each at Mudzimu and Nyama business centres.’’
Officiating during a ground-breaking ceremony for the project this Wednesday, the Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Mary Mliswa said the project should be operational by the end of this month.
Hon Mliswa noted, ‘‘Trenching has to start as soon as possible. We don’t want any delays. Every member of this community should participate to ensure its success.’’
Government is on a drive to bring development in various communities countrywide, with several piped water schemes having been completed.
Some of the completed schemes are Nyamandhlovu piped water scheme in Matabeleland North Province and Ngomahuru water scheme in Masvingo.
