Italian Cuisine Week ends in Vic Falls

Story by Tichaona Kurewa

THE Italian Cuisine Week has ended in Victoria Falls, with acknowledgement by Zimbabwe and Italy that events of this nature can promote cooperation in various sectors of the economy.

Zimbabwe has since embraced gastronomy tourism out of the initiatives of the First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa whom the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) recently recognised and honoured in Spain.

During the Italian Cuisine Week, Zimbabwe also took the opportunity to showcase its own cuisines and dress to the Italians.

“There is no doubt that the programme has also exposed our local chefs to the Italian best practice. My key takeaway from this event is that a platform for close collaboration with the Italian Embassy has been levelled, we need to move together in promoting Gastronomy Tourism in Zimbabwe through various events and activities such as this one.

“This is an opportunity to showcase the fusion of two of the most influential aspects of culture, that is, fashion and food with the context of promoting tourism,” said the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Honourable Barbar Rodzi.

“This collaboration not only creates stunning fashion pieces but also fosters cultural exchange and economic empowerment. By working together, Italian designers and Zimbabwean artisans can share their expertise, learn from each other, and support sustainable and ethical practices in the fashion industry,” said Italian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Umberto Malnati

“As we admire these beautiful creations, let us celebrate the power of fashion to bridge cultures, create opportunities, and inspire creativity. Let us continue to support collaborations like these that honour diversity, promote inclusivity, and showcase the beauty of our interconnected world.”

Meanwhile, local chefs and wine testers who underwent a three-day training in Victoria Falls were presented with certificates and were appreciative of the programme, which they believe will position them better to service the European market when they visit the country.

The Italian Cuisine Week had various activities including training of locals in culinary art and wine tasting, a fashion show and a sampling of various tourism sites and activities.

The Italian Cuisine Week is an annual event that celebrates the rich and diverse culinary heritage of Italy.
