Govt intensifies fight against drug and substance abuse

OVER 480 offenders have been arrested as the Government intensifies the fight against illicit drugs and substances across the country.

The Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere revealed the latest strides in the fight against drug and substance abuse during a Post Cabinet media briefing in Harare this Tuesday.

“A total of 486 (451 males and 35 females) offenders were arrested, out of the 486 offenders 20 were suppliers who were referred to court, while 466 were drug dealers who paid deposit fines, raids were conducted during the period under review, and drugs were confiscated, cabinet wishes to inform the nation that the Liquor Licensing Board conducted alcohol compliance inspections in Epworth, and a total of 85 premises were inspected and of these 15 were operating without licenses,” said Dr Muswere.

Development projects for the third 100-day Cycle of 2023 have also been approved by the cabinet.

“The nation is being informed that one hundred and fifty-eight projects were submitted by twenty-three ministries, including the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) for implementation during the 3rd 100 Day Cycle running from 11 September 2023 to 19 December 2023, A total of 124 projects are ongoing, while 34 are new.”

Dr Muswere also gave an update on the SADC Anti Sanctions Day pencilled for this Wednesday.

“We are inviting all Zimbabweans, all civil servants, and all parastatals to join the anti-sanctions march in calling for the lifting of sanctions as a tool to undermine our democracy and economic sovereignty. The march will begin at Munhumutapa offices along Samora Machel Avenue, into Julius Nyerere and then Nelson Mandela towards Robert Mugabe Square.”
