Calls for the adoption of an education system that propels industrialisation took centre stage at the ongoing Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) International Research Conference.
The 5th edition of the conference coincides with the institution’s 20th anniversary celebrations, drawing researchers from across the globe.
The Minister of higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Professor Amon Murwira, who officially opened the research-oriented event this Monday, stressed the need for an education system based on the ability to produce goods and services.
‘‘Education by its nature must lead to industrialisation and modernisation. Reconfiguration of the education system is important. If we configure our national asset, and human capital, we will reach where we want to reach.’’
CUT Vice Chancellor Professor David Simbi hailed the government’s decision to transform some technical colleges into universities.
‘‘I want to commend the government for transforming some technical colleges into universities. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary and welcome researchers, I also want to acknowledge my predecessor, Professor Charles Nherera.”
Researchers from universities in South Africa and Italy called for the standardisation of African traditional medicines and recognition of education as key in national development.
Grem Biotechnologies Research Centre, University of Limpopo (SA) Dr Ashwell Ndlala noted, ‘‘Standardisation of African traditional medicines is the only way we can build a bio-economy from our bio-resources especially in Africa as a continent. I think if we go towards that route we will save billions do dollars and grants. We all saw what happened with covid-19 because we couldn’t easily get vaccines.’’
The University of Modena and Regio Emilla (Italy) Prof Claudio Fontanesi said, ‘‘I must say education is fundamental for the development of any society. I think going into the future we should develop a world with few differences. Education is good for everyone.’’
Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Mary Mliswa spoke glowingly about CUT’s achievements over the years.
‘‘I am proud that CUT has made government proud yearly and we continue to celebrate milestone achievements towards the promotion of national development goals.’’
The International Research Conference and celebrations will run until the 17th of this month.
