MINES and Mining Development Minister Honourable Winston Chitando has highlighted Zimbabwe’s strong case as a lithium mining powerhouse at the recently ended Africa Mining Indaba in South Africa where global investors considered Zimbabwe as a favourable investment destination.
Honourable Chitando challenged investors from across the globe to partake in Zimbabwe’s growing lithium industry which of late has witnessed significant inflows of foreign capital owing to the existence of the rich resource.
“Investors from across the globe are welcome to be part of Zimbabwe’s growing lithium industry which so far has attracted massive capital injection,” he said.
Minister Chitando also touched on the new policies employed by the Second Republic which have witnessed the rebound and growth of the mining sector.
“Upon the inception of the Second Republic, the mining sector has seen major changes from regulation to incentives as well as securing the much needed skills. This took place on the back of the open for business mantra where various mining projects have come on board,” he added.
Boasting of one the biggest lithium reserves on the globe, a number of lithium mining and processing projects have come on board in the last couple of years, including the Arcadia Lithium Mine plant construction which is nearing completion, while just 8 kilometres away in the same area another lithium project is unfolding at Step Aside Lithium Mine where the exploration is ongoing in what is expected to be another gigantic lithium project in the country.
In Buhera, another lithium mine being set up, Sabi Star Lithium Mine, is expected to propel the country towards a vibrant mining economy by generating US$1 billion annually once operations are in full swing.
