Zim chasing 205 to win World Cup opener

Story by Raynald Ngwarati, Sports Reporter

THE Zimbabwe U-19 Cricket team needs 205 runs to win from 50 overs to win their World Cup opener against Sri Lanka U-19 at the Diamond Oval in South Africa.

Kohl William Eksteen led an excellent bowling unit with three scalps for 40 runs in his 10-over spell as the Young Chevrons bowled Sri Lanka out for 204 runs in 48.3 overs.

The Young Chevrons were in bullish mode from the onset taking three wickets for just 12 runs before Rusanda Gamage and Dinura Kalupahana steadied the innings for Sri Lanka.

Gamage was eventually bowled out for 31 runs by Panashe Taruvinga, while Kalupahana went on to score his half-century partnered by wicketkeeper-batsman Sharujan Shanmuganathan who ended unbeaten on 41.

However, the Young Chevrons’ skipper Matthew Schonken led from the front dismissing Kalupahana for 60 runs.

Kalupahana’s dismissal exposed Sri Lanka’s lower-order batsmen as Shonken, Eksteen and Newman Takudzwa Nyamhuri rattled through Sri Lanka’s lower order.
