York piped water scheme completed

GOVERNMENT-private sector partnerships continue to bear fruit, with the York community in Mberengwa basking in glory after the completion of a piped water scheme in the area.
Water shortages that used to haunt York community under Chief Bvute in Mberengwa District have been extinguished after a local businessperson installed a piped water scheme set to cater for a local secondary school, business centre and three villages.
Completion of the programme came as a stitch in time, especially for women who used to walk long distances to get the precious liquid.
“We want to thank the businessperson for bringing water to the people. As you can see, we are now capable of doing horticulture. This has changed our lives in a way,” said one of the beneficiaries.
Another added, “As you know, water is life, so the villagers of Mberengwa are happy. We are pleased that President Mnangagwa is implementing his vision of leaving no one and no place behind through its private players’ partnership.”
Local businessperson Mr Shepherd Zhou attributed the project to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s mantra “Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo/ Ilizwe Lakhiwa Ngabanikazi Balo.
“The president always says Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo, so I thought as a local person it’s wise for me to do something for the community after discovering that water is scarce in the area,” he said.
Chief Bvute implored other stakeholders to emulate the gesture and contribute to the development of Mberengwa district.
“Water scarcity issues are rife in the York area and surrounding areas. As such, several projects to uplift the villagers have been hampered in the past years. We implore other stakeholders to take a leaf from this and help the community,” he said.
The piped water scheme is set to complement the Presidential Borehole Programme which targets to sink 35 thousand boreholes across the country.
