School robberies on the increase

Story by Fungai Jachi

MORE than twenty schools have experienced armed robberies since the beginning of the second term, a development which worries the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the community at large.

Schools have become targets of armed robbers who are enticed by fees paid in cash and kept in safes at the schools.

The latest attack was on St Ignatius College in Harare where at least 10 robbers pounced on the school anticipating to find cash.

Mr Tafadzwa Choto the School’s Adminstrator gave an account of what happened.

“The incident happened last week on Monday. The armed robbers rounded up security guards before taking them to the administration block where they blasted a stronghold looking for cash, but they didn’t find any. They then went to the Priests’ house where they assaulted two Priests demanding cash.

“When they did not get caah they stole a car which we are informed they used in another robbery at a service station in Ruwa before dumping it along Mutare Highway,” he narrated.

Some of the robberies that happened recently include one carried out in broad day light in Warren Park where six men, posing as parents intending to pay school fees or looking for places for their children, suddenly pointed a pistol at the headmaster before getting away with cash.

Another incident occurred at Ngezi Salvation Army Secondary School in Kadoma, where robbers stole US$1 000.

Police is on record warning schools to desist from keeping cash at schools with a special team of detectives having been set up to investigate the robberies which have become a trend.
