Nation urged to uphold peace and unity in remembrance of Dr Nkomo

A memorial service has been held in honour of the late national icon Dr Joshua Nkomo at his Matsheumhlophe Home in Bulawayo, amid calls for all Zimbabweans to continue upholding peace and unity.

ZIMBABWEANS have been challenged to cherish peace, unity and tolerance in honour of the late Father Zimbabwe Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo.

Speaking on the sidelines of a memorial service in honour of Dr Nkomo, Bulawayo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Honourable Judith Ncube said the selflessness of Dr Nkomo and his love for peace and unity must inspire all Zimbabweans to preserve his legacy.

“On this day we remember the selfless sacrifice that Dr Nkomo made in the long walk to liberate the country. We also have to uphold the values of peace and unity and the need for people to work hard in developing our country, it is important for people to tolerate each other and religiously follow Dr Nkomo’s teachings at all times if we are to develop as a country,” she said.

Family spokesperson Mrs Thandiwe Nkomo Ebrahim said the family is pleased people appreciate their father’s humble contribution to Zimbabwe.

“As a family, we are happy that people appreciate my father’s contribution to nationhood and have a deep understanding of his national vision even 24 years after his passing on so it shall remain an important day for us and the Zimbabwean family,” she said.

Several arts groups also celebrated Dr Nkomo through song and dance.
