Harare City Council exposes residents to diseases

Story by Cordelia Ngara

Residents of Harare have lamented the risk of contracting communicable diseases as the city fathers continuously fail to attend to sewer bursts or collect garbage in most suburbs.

An unpleasant odour in an area in Warren Park suburb has engulfed the location, with as a stream of sewage water steadily flowing in a defined path, with residents pointing to the fact that it is not the first time such a sewer burst has happened and neither will it be the last.

Residents have expressed dismay over poor service delivery, saying such scenarios have become daily occurrences.

“We are forced to keep litter and the children end up playing with the litter. The litter tends to be excess sometimes such that we use shovels to clear it off. If only the city council could act on the matter. When it comes to sewage, there’s nothing positive that we can say,” noted a concerned resident.

“They fix the sewer problems twice a week, but still the problem persists. If it remains like this, then definitely people will fall sick,” added another resident.

“The sewage comes out of the gulley at my house and I often end up restricting the children indoors, because the sewage will be everywhere. If you try to call the city council, they always give silly excuses like they don’t have fuel or sometimes they do not have functional vehicles,” noted an affected resident.

Meanwhile, another resident said, “Sewage bursts on a daily basis and it is not fixed. The concern is where the sewer bursts there are kids and just across the road, they sell food stuffs.”

The negligence of duty by the city fathers in providing social services comes at a time when the country is grappling with a cholera outbreak, with Harare having recorded 21 suspected cases as of the first of April.

However, when the ZBC News crew sought a comment from the local authority, the city fathers were not reachable.
