Harare-Chirundu highway rehabilitation to be complete in 18 months

GOVERNMENT says it will be rehabilitating all the country’s trunk roads with works on the Harare- Chirundu highway scheduled to be completed in 18 months.
The government has indicated that it is revisiting all the country’s trunk roads in an effort to give the roads a face-lift most of which have outlived their design life.
Trunk roads are strategic highways or major roads connecting cities, ports airports and other places.
The scope of work involves widening and resurfacing the roads so that they can accommodate more traffic.
Speaking to ZBC News recently, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Honourable Felix Mhona gave an insight to some of the projects and trunk roads that are earmarked for rehabilitation.
“We are going to revisit all our trunk roads. We started on the Harare Chirundu and we will be done with that road in 18 months and also Chirundu Boarder Post. We are starting to widen Harare Nyamapanda Road and rehabilitate the Nyamapanda Boarder Post above all to the east we are continuing with the dualisation of Harare Mutare road. Now we are at Melfort and we will progress towards Marondera and up to the Forbes Boarder post,” he said.
Meanwhile, plans are underway to construct an expressway to the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare.
The government will also be resuscitating road maintenance units to ensure consistent monitoring and maintenance of all roads.
