Government to launch AI policy

Story by Lisa Masuku

GOVERNMENT is set to come up with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy, with consultations and framework formulations now at an advanced stage.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.

The Ministry of Information Communications Technology, Postal and Courier Service in consultation with stakeholders is set to launch an AI policy as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s digital transformation.

“AI is topical today. We developed a framework which should lead us into coming up with a policy on AI. This framework which should be developed into a policy was done through a consultative approach so that all players are involved. Am happy we will soon be launching our AI policy,” said the Deputy Minister of Information Communications Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Honourable Dingumuzi Phuthi.

The AI policy will seek to explain Zimbabwe’s readiness to embrace digital technologies and laws that should be in place in relation to AI adoption.

He added, “The policy seeks to explain how Zimbabwe is prepared to embrace AI and what laws are we supposed to enact in relation to the adoption of AI. AI is fluid like cyber security so we have to be aware that as much as they are good things to harness, there are also some bad elements.”

Artificial intelligence has emerged as a topic of policy interest, with most countries having recently launched their national AI strategies to articulate public action in the area.
