Benjamin Lock saves the day for Zimbabwe

Story by Anashe Murombedzi

BENJAMIN Lock saved the day for Zimbabwe after winning the second match of the Davis Cup World Group Two playoff against Uruguay at Harare Sports Club this Friday.

Benjamim beat Uruguay’s Ignacio Carou in the second singles match of the day to make it one-all after his brother Courtney lost the first match.

Buoyed by a passionate and cheerful home crowd Benjamin Lock jolted fans to their feet again after winning a crucial tight match 7-6, 6-4.

It was a match that Benjamin had to be at his best in terms of mental fortitude after a tiebreak in the first set which he eventually won 7-6.

The second set was another close contest with the older of the Lock brothers showing resilience to win it 6-4.

It was a huge relief for Benjamin after his young brother Courtney succumbed to a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Uruguay’s Martin Cuevas in the first match.

“I think for a set and half I played really well, but I started to feel sick towards the second set because I was now feeling dizzy I don’t know maybe it was something we ate during breakfast because Courtney was sick as well, but it was pretty surprising anyway and I’m glad I have been playing a lot of matches much tough than these which was an advantage, so I think I have to evaluate what we did today,” he said.

Action continues this Saturday, with the Lock brothers partnering against Martin Cuevas and Ignacio Carou in the doubles before the reverse singles conclude the Davis Cup tie.

The two teams are battling for a slot in the World Group.
