Beitbridge border authorities on alert as SA records first cholera death

PORT health authorities at the Beitbridge border post have intensified cholera screening and awareness campaigns in the face of five cases and one cholera-related death in neighbouring South Africa.

With at least five confirmed cholera cases and one death in neighbouring South Africa, Beitbridge border authorities have geared up cholera screening and awareness campaigns for thousands of migrants traversing through SADC’s busiest port of entry.

Beitbridge District Medical Officer Dr Lenos Samhere said the port of entry is a strategic position in monitoring and disseminating cholera information.

“Our teams are responding well to the obtaining situation. Following confirmed cholera cases in SA and also in Chegutu, we have escalated awareness and we are on the lookout for travellers who present diarrhea symptoms,” he said.

Following several cholera scares that were however confirmed negative in rural Beitbridge, Village Health Workers (VHW) are equally alerting villagers on the dreaded pandemic.

The  Government has put in place various mechanisms to end cholera key being the provision of safe and clean drinking water.
