COMMUNITIES have been encouraged to be vigilant against perpetrators of gender-based violence, some of whom are roaming the streets as they are yet to be apprehended.
As the country commemorates 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, 2 247 cases of gender-based violence have been reported, with 1 500 arrests having been made in Mashonaland East province.
This has prompted law enforcement agencies to implore communities in the province to remain vigilant, revealing that over 33 % of GBV perpetrators are yet to be apprehended.
Officer Commanding ZRP Mashonaland East, Senior Assistant Commissioner Grace Ndou said, “We have people who are perpetrators of GBV who are yet to be arrested so they can strike again.”
Villagers noted the need for all stakeholders to work together to end gender-based violence.
“We must always make sure we protect our children against those who rape children,” a villager said.
Another said, “We want to work with police to protect our communities.”
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence started on the 25th of November and will run until the 10th of this month.
