Notorious armed robber jailed 52 years

Story by Fungai Jachi

NOTORIOUS armed robber Musa Taj Abdul has been sentenced to 52 years in jail for 13 counts of armed robberies committed in Borrowdale, Harare.

Abdul will, however, serve an effective 38-year jail term for the 13 counts of armed robbery after 14 years were suspended on condition of good behaviour and restitution.

The notorious armed robber was jointly charged with Charles Lundu and Sean Andile Dhlamini, with the two also getting the same sentence.

The convicts were given up to March this year to restitute the complainants.

In passing sentence, the presiding magistrate noted that the offence is serious and was committed under aggravating circumstances, hence a lengthy custodial sentence would serve the best interest of justice.

Abdul was currently serving a four-year jail term after he was convicted of illegal possession of a firearm in 2021.

The trio targeted houses in Borrowdale where they used various weapons to threaten occupants, demanding cash and valuables.

Abdul will go down in Zimbabwe’s history as one of the most notorious armed robbers after Chidhumo and Masendeke.

Abdul, who was on the police wanted list since 1999, was arrested in 2020 in Beitbridge after a shootout with the police.
